A Little Reassurance Will Go a Long Way
If you ask any seasoned mom what the hardest part of motherhood has been for them, a lot of them will likely say it was bringing home a newborn for the first time. And anyone that’s been there has no problem relating. The joy, excitement, fear, nervousness, self-doubt and overall bewilderment can be overwhelming to say the least. You spend your days tending to their every tiny whim, your entire world revolving solely around them. You join the groups, read the books, subscribe to the blogs and still you wonder if you’re doing anything right at all.
Did we just hear a resounding Amen?
Then there are those moments that bring us down to Earth. When, at the end of the day, your baby is quietly sleeping, totally oblivious to the day’s mishaps (you forgot to warm the wipes again) and everything is worth it. We can look at our content children and know that we are, in fact, doing something right.
But it sure doesn’t hurt to have some inspiration or hear encouragement from those around us from time to time.
Here are 5 things every new mommy needs to hear:
1. You're doing a great job.
Because, trust us, you are. Even on those days you’re pretty sure everything you’re doing is totally wrong. Even when you forget a doctor’s appointment or drop your phone in the toilet, you really are doing a great job. Being a parent is hard, sometimes thankless, work. It can be easy to forget that even on our worse days, we are totally rocking it.
How can you tell? Easy...by the smile on your children’s faces.
2. It gets easier.
When it feels like you haven't slept in days, this can be music to a mommy’s ears. You won’t always be waking up every two hours to feed, you will eventually be able to go to the grocery store without an hour of prep work or maybe even alone (gasp!). As your baby grows, as does its independence, meaning you gain more free time. You will be able to shower every day again at some point. And you might even be able to go to the bathroom alone, too.
3. Nothing will ever go back to the old normal.
How should we put it, this is the new normal, so as Elizabeth Gilbert said, “Embrace the glorious mess that you are.” You will have a hard time staying up past 9 pm for years to come, you’ll basically never have enough time in the day to get everything done and your idea of “date night” looks a lot different than it used to. Not to mention, your friendships will change and how you spend time with your friends will change too. Things will never go back to how they were pre-baby and, let’s be honest, you wouldn’t really want them to. This new normal will work just fine.
4. There's no way to be perfect.
But there are countless ways to be good. What does perfect mean, anyway? In our minds, there’s no such thing. We all make mistakes and we all have plenty to learn about every part of life. In fact, the learning never ends, so don’t waste the precious early years of your children’s lives trying to be perfect. You're not superwoman (and neither are any other moms, regardless of what they say). Holding yourself to an unrealistic standard will only cause more stress and who needs that?
5. You deserve a break.
Because all moms do. But we often feel guilty taking time for ourselves, away from our kids and other family responsibilities--this is ludacris. As mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, friends, neighbors (the list goes on for days) we have a tremendous amount of responsibility and pressure on a daily basis. And we all deserve a break from it. Your health and happiness are just as important as everyone else’s.
So, allow yourself a break from time to time to recharge and be something other than mommy; you deserve it.
