The Science of Art

Feb 7, 2022 | Featured Artist, Art

Our team is passionate about creativity, which is one of the reasons why our OKC web design studio regularly features local artists. To start off 2022, we are happy to showcase the work of Malcolm Zachariah. This unique artist has a profound love of art and the sciences, enabling him to create pieces that show how everything in the world is connected. His usual mediums include pen and ink, watercolor, origami, and ceramics.

As an artist and biochemist, Malcolm is inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s Principles for the Development of a Complete Mind: “Study the science of art. Study the art of science. Develop your senses – especially learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else.”

A Creative Mind.

Malcolm has always loved creating new things. As a child, he participated in every art class he could. His imagination was always at play. As he explains, “As a kid, I made my own style of cut and folded paper animals.” While Malcolm’s love of art has always remained a strong presence, he was less prolific while studying biochemistry in college and graduate school. After leaving grad school early, Malcolm did spend some time living solely as an artist. He now balances art with working in state government. However, nothing will ever replace art in his life. “I appreciate the creative freedom of making what I want, and slowly I’m trying on bigger projects.”

Nature and Movement.

The show currently displayed in our studio is a combination of several years of work with a shift in medium. “I regularly draw with pens, and I feel watercolors extended those drawings with the addition of color.” Malcolm’s work has often been inspired by nature, but these pieces are more abstract when compared to his earlier “realist nature-based works.”

Another source of inspiration for this art is movement. Malcolm shared that “… often, music is playing while I’m painting. I fill my works with rhythm and movement.” You can easily see the sense of motion when you take the time to enjoy the dynamic beauty of his pieces.

Beauty in Abstraction

Malcolm does not expect everyone to have the same reaction to his work. His current style allows room for artistic freedom (both for himself as an artist and for everyone who views his pieces). As he explains, “With abstraction, I feel there are so many interpretations viewers can have, and while I enjoy when people guess my inspirations, I also like when they see something completely different.”

“This is the first time I’ve shown most of these works, so even I was surprised at how they looked together. Overall, I hope viewers see my paintings celebrate the vitality of nature through its shapes, colors, and patterns.”
