A Vision of Whimsy

May 12, 2023 | Featured Artist

From graphics and websites to paintings and sculptures, our Oklahoma design team loves to see the extraordinary results of creative expression. As such, we are always excited to meet with and support other creators by displaying their works at our studio. This spring, we are excited to share the unique mixed media pieces of Bianca Roland.

If Bianca’s pieces seem familiar, you may have seen her before online, at Oklahoma City art shows, or even at our studio! Bianca is our first returning featured artist, and our team loves seeing how much her techniques have changed and the finished works have evolved since we met three years ago.

(Re)Introducing Bianca.

Artist Bianca Roland stands in front of a mixed-media piece wearing handmade earrings.

When discussing how she has grown as an artist, Bianca shared that she has found a strong artistic voice and style. She has pivoted away from painting, and now creates 3d mixed media pieces that range from canvases and wall hangings to sculptures and jewelry. Through this style shift, “I’m able to capture a vision of whimsy that I struggled to find while working in 2d. I’m also just generally more confident as an artist.”

Establishing a New Style

Bianca’s works can always be recognized by the vivid colors, structural elements, and strong textures featured throughout. These qualities come from the unique ways she sources materials for each project – many of the objects included in these mixed media pieces were recycled or even simply found.

Multiple 3D mixed media canvases are hung on the myheartcreative studio wall.

Said Bianca, “… I have to think outside the box when I’m hunting for materials for my art. I enjoy that challenge…” Working only with what she can find makes the artistic process very intuitive, which is perfect for Bianca as “… I love using random bits in unexpected ways.”

Collaborative Maximalism.

As a self-described “maximalist at heart,” Bianca’s latest works feature collections of diverse and colorful things that are used and combined in unexpected ways. This was inspired by various collective projects, such as the indigenous practice of ribbon trees or the impromptu piles of objects that often occur at important locations.

Artist Bianca Roland adjusts the artistic elements on a large mixed media wall hanging at the myheartcreative studio.

Because they consist primarily of objects that were found or thrifted, Bianca’s works are collaborative art projects in their own way: “Every piece that goes into my wall hangings has some kind of story, even if I don’t necessarily know what that story is.” This perspective inspires the creative process behind each piece in different ways; for example, she often uses finished canvases from thrift stores as the foundation for her sculpture-like canvas pieces.

When asked what she hopes people will take away from her work, Bianca stated: “I hope my art speaks to the inner child… I hope it inspires people to look at things differently.”
